I'm sure you've noticed that when you play at different times and on different days, you run into different kinds of players. I think it is safe to say that weekend players are somewhat different from "week day" players. "Weekends only" players tend to be casual players and are often not really focused on gold-making as you may be. Most of them are not even aware of the economic schemes that go on in the game and so they will sometimes add an uncharacteristic superficial element to the Market for short periods of time.
With their high level chars, they are eager buyers of anything purple, and so the buyer's spike on the weekends floods the market with money and goods as they sell off their unwanted or surplus items.
Friday evenings are the best time to put in your goods so you can take full advantage of weekend buyers. When it comes to the weekend, sell early and buy late. Also, be on the lookout for undervalued items and many casual players don't really know the true value of their goods.
